DoHAC Cancer Screening Photo Library - Federal Government | Case Study

As an Australian Government Creative and Digital Communications Panel Approved Supplier, we have worked alongside various government departments to produce key marketing material and Image Libraries. In 2023 we were contracted by the Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) to produce a library of images to help promote three of the Federal Government’s Cancer Screening Services.

The Department of Health & Aged Care had noticed gaps in Cancer Screening – specifically in rural, lower socio-economic, and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. There was concern that the existing library of images was not particularly relatable. Lightbulb Studio was tasked with creating a new library of images that was relatable across these key demographics, but also across the three main cancer screening services – Bowel, Breast, and Cervical Screening.

As Lifestyle Photographers, we understand the importance of properly unpacking a brief to ensure the final images tell the desired story. For this particular project we were lucky enough to work alongside our friends at Huddle Studio for the development of a Strategic Creative Plan. Within this plan we looked deeper into the key demographics – what they valued, how they spend their time, and what were their preconceptions around cancer-screening. We also looked at more technical and creative aspects – what sort of lighting was appropriate, what sort of framing and backgrounds would be most relatable.

After developing a clear understanding of the story we needed to tell, we got cracking on production. This shoot involved 4 weeks of pre production, 5 days of shooting, 8 Locations, 23 talent, including styling  for all talent.

One of the key images that the department required was of the rural cancer screening van in a remote setting. We liaised with Breast Screen NSW to identify the most appropriate time and location to photograph the Breast Screen Van as it moved across country NSW. This particular shot took us up to Condobolin in north-west NSW.

Another critical part of production was ensuring that we had accurate representation across the target demographics. It was important to ensure that the people in the photographs were comfortable being associated with cancer screening, especially since culturally these subjects can be a bit of a taboo subject.

We completed the photoshoot across 5 days, travelling to Braidwood, Condobolin, and doctor’s surgeries and houses across Canberra. We had a team of 6 including photographer, art director, assistant, 2 x stylist and a hair and makeup artist.

The end result of the shoot was a library of 170 images, that the department can use across social media, print advertising and digital marketing.
